First XI Matches

2014 couldn't have gone much better for Carrickfergus as they captured the magnificent seven trophies in a memorable campaign. Four of those trophies came at senior level, including two at national level, which Cricket Ireland President Joe Doherty stated has made them one of the favourites for the 'Team of the Year' at the CI awards. It wasn't all plain sailing for the club in the league, as they lost 5 and win 13 of their 18 league games to finish on 52 points, 8 ahead of their promotion rivals. They edged out Cliftonville by just four runs in a thrilling contest in the Senior Cup before losing in the next round to eventual winners CSNI. They held their nerve to beat Derriaghy by 11 runs in the T20 Trophy final, and easily overcame Downpatrick to win the Ulster Shield by 8 wickets. They were very impressive in capturing the National Cup, as they travelled the country beating North Kildare, Bangor, Galway and Dundrum (LCU), before lifting the prestigious trophy after an emphatic 120 run win over Killyclooney at Downpatrick. Looking at their impressive statistics, they have two important attributes necessary in a successful squad. Not only do they quality in abundance, what stood them apart from their rivals was depth - a scarce commodity in Northern cricket teams. The club used 19 players - less than most, as they had more or less a settled team throughout the season. Two players passed the 1000 run milestone - a truly wonderful achievement, while five players made in excess of 500 runs, three of whom at an average of above fifty - impressive by any standards. Jamie Holmes topped the runs aggregate with 1158 runs at 52.64, while professional Indrajeet Kamtekar's 1031 runs came at 51.55. Michael Gilmour hit 647 at 24.58, just ahead of veteran Ryan Eagleson whose 631 runs cane at a healthy 52.58. Skipper Iain Parkhill completed a top five which was the envy of the division by making 508 runs at 22.09, while Alex Haggan chipped in with a valuable 240 runs at 21.82. The previously mentioned depth was never more evident than in the bowling stakes, as no fewer than seven players took 20 wickets or more - another remarkable achievement. 'Kammy' topped the charts with 56 wickets at a paltry 10.70, while Ryan Eagleson's conversion from pace to spin paid major dividends as the spin twins took 101 wickets between them - Eagleson taking 45 wickets at a miserly 11.93. Holmes completed a fine-all-round season by picking up 31 wickets at 21.29, while Alex Haggan managed 25 at 23.40, and Anthony Martin24 at 22.92. Stephen Grant and Richard Hood took 21 wickets apiece at 15.29 and 22.23 respectively to complete a super set of figures for the bowling unit, who were backed up by sound catching and determined fielding. The club will know that 2015 will be difficult as they return to Premier cricket - as Muckamore demonstrated, top flight NCU cricket is a whole different ball game to Section One. The club need to add to their ranks to build on the success of 2014 if their dreams aren't to turn to nightmares. CARRICKFERGUS BATTING 1. Jamie Holmes 1158 runs at 52.64 2.
