2009 Kwik Cricket Report
On Monday June 22nd Carrickfergus Cricket Club hosted the annual Subway Kwik
Cricket Tournament at Middle Road. In glorious weather seven teams of eight
totalling fifty six players from five Carrickfergus primary schools competed
for the trophy. Teams were entered from Central, Eden, Victoria, Woodburn and
Woodlawn; all schools where cricket coaching is provided by Carrickfergus
Cricket club.
The day’s play began with two group round robins to decide who would go through
to the semi finals. After the group stage Acorn, Group A winners progressed to
play Central, Group B runners up in one semi and Eden, Group B winners went
through to take on Victoria ’A’, Group A runners up.
In the semis Central beat Acorn by six runs while Victoria had a more comfortable
fifteen run win over Eden. Having won the cup on several occasions in the past
Victoria looked odds on to lift it again but were just pipped by a Central team
who scored 226 to win by six runs so there will be a new name engraved on the
cup this season.
Presenting the trophy to Central, Roger Bell, Carrickfergus Senior Vice President
congratulated not just the winners but all the players who took part. Carrick club
pro, Zimbabwe international Gavin Ewing who with the help of Matt Mangan takes
cricket into the primary schools of Carrickfergus was pleased with the enthusiasm
of all the young cricketers including some with real talent who will one day play
senior cricket for the club.
In addition to coaching in local primary schools Carrickfergus Cricket Club runs a
number of junior teams including a successful under eleven side. Anyone wishing to
join the under elevens will be made very welcome at practice which is held every
Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the club.
