Profile
Louis Delport (24) is Carrick's overseas player for the 2013 season. He is a left-arm spin bowling all-rounder who plays for Belville Cricket Club in Cape Town’s Premier Competition (WPCA 1A) and is also a member of the Western Province Amateur Provincial Squad.
Delport has been a stand-out in the top tier competition since 2008 and over the past two seasons has established himself as one of the leading spinners in the competition, with 50 wickets at 10.80 (2010/11) and 57 wickets at 13.28 (2011/12). He has also shown his all-round ability batting in the middle-lower order with 242 runs at 24.20 (2010/11) and 254 runs at 28.22 (2011/12).
Delport is a hard working, intelligent cricketer who is known to be a great club man. He is an academic off the field, who is a college lecturer away from the game, but it’s his on field exploits that have put him in contention for higher honours in the game.
The Capetonian played his maiden stint abroad in 2012 for Surrey Championship (Division 2) side Pyrford and was a great success, particularly hitting his straps in the latter half of the season when promoted to open the batting, hitting four half-centuries. He was a stand-out in the league with his left-arm spin taking 36 wickets at 18.86 which saw Delport finish third in the division wicket-charts (behind Pakistani Kurham Irshad and former England spinner Shaun Udal).
Delport comes highly recommend by sources in South Africa and also his Surrey club who endorse his efforts both on and off the field highly. Not only did he star on the field for Pyrford, but he was an integral member of their coaching team and was the lead groundsman throughout the summer.
He is currently in the Western Province Provincial squad and with his recent performances, stands a very good chance to break into the first-class cricket this summer.
